IBM’s Social Business Predictions for 2012 →
For Social Business, 2011 was a year of exploration, experimentation and in some cases innovation. Both small and large organizations in a variety of verticals globally began to realize the power of bringing social behaviors, processes and platforms behind the firewall. According to a 2011 AIIM survey, over 50% of organizations now consider social business to be imperative or significant to their business goals.
As 2011 comes to a close, it’s time to look ahead to what’s next in social business for 2012. IBM’s Alistair Rennie, GM of Social Business, has three predictions for what we can expect to see in social in 2012:
1. Social Analytics
“In today’s highly connected global business environment, the way people communicate, find and share information and work together has changed dramatically. In 2012, social analytics tools will become the must have to gain insight and make better, faster business decisions and improve customer satisfaction. Whether it’s analytics of an internal social network, or gaining customer insight through analysis of external social networks, organizations will increasingly rely on social technologies to listen, examine, and connect to act.”2. “Gamification, the use of game elements in non-game systems to improve business outcomes, has the opportunity to transform how employees work inside the enterprise and will certainly be something social businesses explore in 2012.”3. Community Managers Rule
“Just like the Internet opened up a world of new opportunities, the rise of social business is creating new jobs. With the adoption of these new internal and external social business tools comes the increasing need for staff to manage the new processes and communities, to measure their effectiveness, and to educate and enable the workforce to participate. Corporations are quickly realizing they must create new roles like the community manager to take on these new responsibilities. Watch for this role to take off in 2012, with organizations of all shapes and sizes, in a variety of industries calling on experts to help to build, maintain, and activate members in an online location around common interests and topics. アマゾン創業者であるジェフ・べゾスのプリンストン大学卒業式でのスピーチが載っていたので、ご紹介したい。卒業式は5月30日、Class of 2010（2010年卒業生）に向けてのスピーチ。
まず最初に、べゾスは、10歳の頃の自分の経験から説き起こす。
べゾスは子供時代の夏休みを祖父母のケンタッキー州の農園で過ごすことが多かったが、トレーラー（Airstream trailer）での、祖父母のアメリカ各地やカナダへのキャラバンに同行することもあった。そんな折の出来事。ヘビースモーカーであるおばあちゃんがトレーラーの中で煙をくゆらすのをみて、べゾス少年はある計算をする。1本のたばこが、寿命をどれくらい（何分）縮めるか、といった内容の広告を思い出し、「1本が2分とすると、おばあちゃんは1日に何本吸うから・・・」と計算を始める。そして得意げにおばあちゃんに「1本で2分の寿命が縮むとすると、おばあちゃんは9年寿命が短くなるよ！」と伝えると・・・。おばあちゃんは大泣きした。べゾス少年は、「なんて賢いんだろう！」と褒められると思っていたのに、おばあちゃんが泣きだしたのでびっくりした。
そのやりとりを見ていたおじいちゃんはトレーラーを止め、やさしく穏やかな口調でこう言った。
「Jeff, one day you’ll understand that it’s harder to be kind than clever.（ジェフ、賢くあるよりも、優しくあるほうが難しいことだと、お前もいつかわかるようになるよ。」
この話を枕に、べゾスは卒業生たちに「gifts（持ってうまれたもの、天賦の才能）」と「choices（自ら選択したもの）」の違いについて語る。
Cleverness is a gift, kindness is a choice. Gifts are easy — they’re given after all. Choices can be hard. You can seduce yourself with your gifts if you’re not careful, and if you do, it’ll probably be to the detriment of your choices.This is a group with many gifts. I’m sure one of your gifts is the gift of a smart and capable brain.
（賢さは持って生まれたもの（gift）であり、優しさは選択したもの（choice）だ。giftsは、天から与えられたものだから苦労はなく、choicesの方が困難だ。ここにいる皆さんはgiftsに恵まれている。賢さというgiftだ。）
How will you use these gifts? And will you take pride in your gifts or pride in your choices?
(あなたがたは、こうしたgiftsをどのように使うだろうか。そして自らが持って生まれたものと、自らの選択（choices）に誇りを持てるだろうか。
このあと、べゾスは、16年前にアマゾンを始めた頃のことを語る。よく知られる通り、べゾスはインターネットの成長を目にして、本のネット販売のモデルを思いつき、勤めていたニューヨークの投資銀行をやめ、妻と二人で西海岸（シアトル）に向かう。ＮＹの銀行をやめるとき、上司に「いいアイデアだけど、今の仕事をやめて始めるほどのアイデアかどうか、48時間だけ考えてごらん」と言われ、べゾスは48時間考えたが、やはり決心は変わらない。
After much consideration, I took the less safe path to follow my passion, and I’m proud of that choice.
（熟慮したあと、私はpassionに従って、より困難な道を選ぶことにした。そして、その選択をしたことを誇りに思っている。）
スピーチの最後の方で、「明日から、あなた自身が創造する、本当の意味でのあなた方の人生の物語が始まる（Tomorrow, in a very real sense, your life — the life you author from scratch on your own — begins.）」として、以下のような問いかけの言葉を、べゾスは卒業生たちに贈っている。
- How will you use your gifts? What choices will you make?
（持って生まれたもの(gifts)をどのように生かしますか、どんな選択(choices)をしますか？）
- Will inertia be your guide, or will you follow your passions?
（惰性に従いますか、それとも情熱に従いますか？）
- Will you follow dogma, or will you be original?

Xeni Jardin, Boing Boing blogger, live-tweeted her first mammogram today. Unfortunately, about an hour ago she learned that she in fact has breast cancer. Many are wishing her well on Twitter. Here’s hoping that her bravery and candor inspires other women to get checked, and that she beats this thing.

Tom Vander Ark is an edu-futurist par excellence. He’s chair of the International Association for K-12 Online Learning, author of the new Getting Smart: How Personal Digital Learning is Changing the World, and an investor in startup technology and entrepreneurship school General Assembly (see this month’s Life in Beta) through his education-focused venture fund Learn Capital. Here, he shares some of his views on the importance of “just-in-time learning” and the “plummeting” value of traditional education.
And this is a general trend in education that you write about in Getting Smart, right?
I think in general in the industry, the ability to deliver around that need will get much more sophisticated—to find out not only what people need to learn, but to get smarter about how they learn best. So we have a smart learner profile, a motivational profile not only what they need to learn but the best way for them to learn.
